Tom Smith is a combat medic, Firefighter, Refugee Aid Worker, Proud Democrat. Husband and foster parent to two amazing kids. Seeking to serve Maryland House of Delegates District 14 with Courage and Compassion.
After graduating from the Air Force Academy, Tom deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan to lead teams of medics into combat. He saw the suffering and injustice there firsthand, which reinforced his lifelong commitment to putting service before self. His devotion led to him fighting forest fires here in the U.S., working with a veteran-led NGO’s in a Syrian refugee camp, and responding to an earthquake in Ecuador. Tom has seen how powerful an act of service can be—and how challenging, yet rewarding, it can be to create positive change.
The divisiveness of the 2016 presidential election made Tom realize that his service was needed back home. After helping a fellow veteran run for Congress, Tom decided to join the fight himself. He moved to Montgomery County and now works with veterans in Congress to craft bipartisan legislation as the Policy Director for the For Country Caucus. Tom established deep roots in Burtonsville, and he and his wife Amy became foster parents in 2020. With two young kids in our public school system, Tom will fight to create a better future for all our children.
Elections make a fundamental contribution to democratic governance. Because direct democracy – a form of government in which political decisions are made directly by the entire body of qualified citizens – is impractical in most modern societies, democratic government must be conducted through representatives.
